Many people prefer hiring a credit repair company such as Lexington Law, one of the pioneers of credit repair services.

What is Lexington Law?

Founded in 1991 as an actual law firm, Lexington Law helps consumers in all 50 states straighten out their credit scores.

For a monthly fee, this Utah-based firm will help you remove negative items from your credit report. The process can, within a few months, lead to a better credit score.

With the help of Lexington Law, you can remove unjust, misleading, or unverified negative items from your credit history.

Lexington Law could also give you the tools and skills you’d need to monitor your credit history and maintain a good credit score in the future.

Lexington Law is not a scam but nor is it a magical solution to your credit problems. The service offers legwork and expertise; its solutions still require time and patience.

Is it worth it? Let’s dig deeper to find out.

How Lexington Law Works

Lexington Law works in a simple way to help you start rebuilding your credit score. Any inaccuracy in your credit report can lead to negative effects on your scoreline. So Lex Law’s first step is usually to verify all the information on your credit report.

In this first phase of the credit repair process you can get a copy of your report and consult with the attorneys and paralegals from Lexington Law to decide which items in your credit report could be contested.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires credit bureaus to record only verifiable and accurate information. If the negative items on your credit report do not meet these criteria, they must be removed.

If you identify incorrect or misleading negative items on your reports, Lexington Law’s attorneys will send letters to the three credit bureaus requesting these items be removed. If these negative items alone are causing your bad credit, you’ll be back in business within a couple months.

You could do this yourself without Lexington Law’s help. Many people do. The value you get from Lexington Law includes having an ally who speaks the language of the credit bureaus. And let’s face it: cease and desist letters have a lot more bite when they come from a law firm.

A Quick Note About Credit Repair

But let’s be clear about credit repair: If you have legitimate problems — a series of charge-offs and a long history of late payments — you may have a legitimately bad credit score. A credit repair company can’t fix this; it can only help ensure your credit history is reported accurately and fairly.

Credit repair for a genuinely bad credit score requires changes to your financial habits and a lot of patience. Over time, your better habits will start to outweigh your negative credit history. Over time your credit score will reflect your better habits, especially as your negative items age off your report..

Sign Up Process with Lexington Law

Within forty-eight hours of signing up online or via the firm’s phone number, a representative from Lexington Law will contact you and act as your personal representative.

Your rep will ask for your details, which will be used to obtain all your credit reports from three credit bureaus — TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.

After analyzing the credit reports, a Lexington Law consultant will reach out to you with the items that can be challenged. You’ll be able to share your input about your credit score, too.

From here, your personal rep will get in touch with the creditors and reporting bureaus to start the process of removing inaccurate or misleading marks such as inaccurate charge-offs or late payments.

Once the removal process has been successful (and depending on your subscribed plan), you will get an analysis of your report. Any issues not resolved will still be followed and escalated by your personal representative from Lexington Law.

Pros and Cons of Lexington Law

Lexington Law has set a high standard for other credit repair companies. Its pros include:

Pros

  • Legal Team: One of the most impressive things about Lexington Law is the fact that it employs attorneys and paralegals. This ensures the correct legal channels are used to repair or correct your credit score.
  • Fairly priced Plans: Lexington Law’s packages are all fairly priced. The best credit repair companies shouldn’t be cost-prohibitive. Lexington Law offers options to fit most budgets. The Standard plan can get the job done.
  • High-Quality Credit Analysis and Counseling: Lexington Law uses a personalized credit analysis and counseling approach. A paralegal is assigned to every client to ensure they get the best services and advice.
  • Great Customer Experience: Lexington Law’s staff is courteous and professional. Reps are available from 7 am to 7 pm weekdays Mountain time (5 am to 5 pm Eastern). The sales staff is available more often, including on weekends. And you can start the process online anytime.

Cons

While Lexington Law typically meets customer expectations, there are some improvement areas we can suggest.

  • BBB Rating: Lexington Law has a few complaints on the Better Business Bureau that has affected its BBB rating. Most complaints have been addressed by the company. Consumer Affairs also shows some shaky interactions.
  • More Expensive Plans Have Unnecessary Features: Unless you need identity theft protection and other consumer protections from your credit repair company, Lexington Law’s Premier Plus plan simply has too many features. A credit repair firm makes its money focusing on immediate credit issues. Just stick with the basic or perhaps the intermediate plan.
  • Extra Reports Cost More: The Standard plan charges $14.95 extra for all credit reports. To avoid this fee I recommend using an app like Credit Karma or Credit Sesame to get a good idea of what’s on your credit report. Or you could request your annual free credit report from TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax independent of Lexington Law.

Alternatives to Lexington Law

  • Credit Saint
  • Sky Blue
  • CreditRepair.com
  • The Credit People
  • Pyramid Credit Repair

Another Option: Do it yourself. The DIY credit repair approach can work, especially if you have only one negative item to get removed. You’ll spend some money on postage and some time on the phone. But with a simple goal, you should be able to get it done yourself.

If you have multiple credit card accounts, a personal loan lender, and a couple student loan services providers, then you probably do need some professional help.

Is Lexington Law Credit Repair Right For You?

Not many people realize the convenience of having someone else sort through your credit items in search of ways to improve your score. It’s even more convenient when someone else goes through the process of reaching out to the credit bureaus to correct errors.

People don’t realize this convenience until, of course, they try to improve their own scores through the DIY approach. Yes, it’s possible, but it takes a commitment and attention to detail most of us don’t have in excess. The time commitment is the biggest issue.

Lexington Law stands out for these reasons and because of the legal angle. These people speak the language of credit inquiries. They have the phone numbers of the credit bureaus on speed dial. If anyone can sort out a tangled mess of a credit situation, it’s a dedicated attorney and paralegal.

Regardless of how complex your credit history has become, I recommend Lexington Law Credit Repair as an ideal solution — especially the most affordable basic plan.
